Pakistan carries one of the highest burdens of Hepatitis C in the world. For millions of Pakistanis, the disease progresses quietly – undetected, untreated, and compounded by the stigma that surrounds it. Since 2016, Indus Hospital & Health Network’s Hepatitis Control Program has worked to change that, offering free screening, diagnosis, and treatment to patients across the country.
This year, the program reached two milestones worth marking. Over 53,000 individuals were screened, and among those treated, a 96% cure rate was achieved, a figure that reflects not just medical efficacy, but the dedication of trained teams committed to seeing every patient through to recovery.
Reaching Where It Matters Most
Access has always been at the heart of this program. The recent expansion to Makli in rural Sindh extends life-saving services to communities that have historically been the hardest to reach; where distance, cost, and lack of awareness have long kept patients from seeking care.
Through rapid testing and advanced Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) diagnostics, the program identifies infections early and initiates complete care without delay. The result is a treatment pathway that is both clinically rigorous and genuinely accessible.
Beyond the Diagnosis
Hepatitis C carries a social weight that extends beyond the physical. Patients frequently contend with fear, misinformation, and community stigma long before they ever receive a diagnosis. IHHN’s program addresses this directly through community education initiatives that challenge misconceptions and support patients in completing their treatment without shame or isolation.
It is this dual commitment, to medical excellence and human dignity, that defines the program’s approach.
For Abdul Majeed, a farmer from Muzaffargarh, the diagnosis arrived as a shock. What followed was a journey that tested more than his health.
“Learning I had Hepatitis C was overwhelming. But when my treatment ended and I was told I was cured, it was one of the happiest moments of my life. I didn't just survive Hepatitis C, I overcame the fear and negativity around me.
Abdul’s story is one of thousands. Each cured patient represents not only a medical success but a life restored, to work, to family, and to dignity.
With every screened individual and every completed treatment, IHHN’s Hepatitis Control Program moves Pakistan closer to the elimination of Hepatitis C as a public health threat. It stands as proof that quality healthcare need not be a privilege, that with the right systems, the right commitment, and the right reach, it can be delivered to anyone, anywhere.
Embark on a meaningful journey by getting involved in our mission to provide quality healthcare for all. Your involvement can make a significant difference in the lives of those in need. Here’s how you can be a catalyst for change.
