School holidays bring a welcome change of pace. Bedtimes become more flexible, routines relax, and children finally have time to play, explore, and unwind. But while the break is exciting, it can also lead to irregular eating habits that affect a child’s energy, mood, and overall health.
Without the structure of school days, children may snack more often, skip meals, or reach for sugary treats and processed foods out of boredom rather than hunger. While occasional indulgences are part of the fun, maintaining a balanced diet during the holidays helps support healthy growth and keeps children active throughout the break.
A predictable eating routine can prevent constant grazing. Aim for three balanced meals with one or two healthy snacks each day. Regular mealtimes help children recognize their natural hunger and fullness cues while providing steady energy for play and learning.

Each meal should include a variety of foods:
Offering a colorful plate not only improves nutrition but also makes meals more appealing to children.
Children are more likely to choose nutritious options when they’re readily available. Keep cut fruit, vegetable sticks, yogurt, nuts (where age-appropriate), or homemade popcorn within easy reach instead of sugary snacks or chips.

Warm weather and outdoor activities increase fluid needs. Encourage children to drink water regularly throughout the day, even before they feel thirsty. Limit sugar-sweetened beverages, which can add unnecessary calories without providing essential nutrients.

School holidays are a great opportunity to teach healthy eating habits. Let children help choose recipes, shop for ingredients, wash vegetables, or prepare simple meals. When children participate in cooking, they’re often more willing to try new and nutritious foods.
Ice cream, birthday parties, and family outings are all part of making holiday memories. Rather than banning favorite treats, focus on balance. Nutritious meals most of the time leave room for occasional indulgences without guilt.
Healthy eating during school holidays doesn’t have to be restrictive. By keeping meals balanced, staying hydrated, and encouraging positive food habits, families can help children return to school feeling energized, healthy, and ready to learn. After all, the best holiday memories are made when children have the energy to enjoy every moment.
