Eighteen years ago, a vision took place in Karachi; to provide high-quality, accessible healthcare to all. What began as a 150-bed hospital that was operationalized in 2007, has blossomed into a sprawling network of healthcare facilities across Pakistan. IHHN has grown exponentially, touching countless lives through its holistic healthcare facilities, all steadfast in their commitment to delivering 100% free and quality medical services.
The Birth of a Dream
It was 1987, and Karachi had just witnessed its first bomb blast in Bohri Bazaar that claimed the lives of 75 people and injured over 500 more. Dr. Abdul Bari Khan was working at Civil Hospital Karachi, when victims of the blast began flooding in hoards. The hospital was overwhelmed within minutes, with beds filling up instantly and patients lying on the floors, waiting for help.
But outside the hospital, something remarkable was happening. Ordinary citizens stood in long queues, waiting to donate blood, antibiotics, and whatever money they could spare. There was chaos inside, but an extraordinary sense of unity outside. Amidst the sirens, and the exhaustion, Dr. Bari looked around and thought to himself:
“We are a great nation. That day changed me. It showed me that while our people may face hardship, they have immense hearts.”
Alongside colleagues and acquaintances who shared this vision, Dr. Bari decided that he would build a hospital where every human being would be treated with dignity, and no one would ever be turned away for lack of money. A hospital that was clean, compassionate, and completely free of cost.
That promise became the seed of what is now the Indus Hospital & Health Network.
Ensuring Universal Access to Healthcare
Indus Hospital & Health Network (IHHN) envisions a future where every person in Pakistan, regardless of income, location, or background, has access to quality, free healthcare.
Today, IHHN is rapidly expanding its primary care network across the country, focusing on underserved and hard-to-reach communities. The network includes over 100 primary care sites offering essential services to reduce the load on hospitals and promote early intervention. This includes 12 hospital-based facilities that ensure smooth referrals and integrated care, along with fixed clinics in both rural and urban areas. To address challenges of mobility and access, IHHN has launched container clinics, mobile clinics, and a boat clinic to serve remote regions by land and water. In addition, telehealth clinics allow patients in isolated areas to consult expert physicians virtually.
A Future Rooted in Access and Dignity
With only 0.6 beds available per 1,000 people, Pakistan’s healthcare infrastructure remains dangerously inadequate, but IHHN is committed to fixing this broken medical architecture. To address this urgent gap, IHHN is expanding its Karachi facility to over 1,000 beds and has launched a 600-bed hospital in Lahore. These developments will significantly increase access to free, quality care across Pakistan.
IHHN’s expanding healthcare services reflect IHHN’s unwavering commitment to healthcare equity by ensuring that no matter where a person lives, they are never denied the right to timely, compassionate, and comprehensive care. Powered by innovation, mobility, and community trust, the network’s reach continues to grow.
As Indus Hospital & Health Network marks 18 years of service, it is reflecting on a remarkable journey, which entails a future where the vision of a healthier, more dignified Pakistan becomes a reality for all.
