For most children, school is a place to learn, make friends, and imagine what they want to become when they grow up. It is where dreams begin to take shape. But for a child diagnosed with cancer, life changes overnight.
Long hospital stays, frequent treatments, and weakened immunity often mean stepping away from classrooms, playgrounds, and the everyday experiences that define childhood. While their friends continue to move forward, these children are left wondering when life will feel normal again.
At IHHN, healing goes beyond medicine. It means preserving childhood, nurturing hope, and reminding every child that their future is still waiting for them. That is the purpose of Indus Kay Sitaray, an in-house school designed to ensure that a cancer diagnosis does not become the end of a child’s aspirations.
Indus Kay Sitaray is much more than a place to continue academic learning. It is a space where children can rediscover joy, curiosity, and confidence during one of the most difficult periods of their lives.
The classroom becomes a welcome change from hospital rooms and treatment schedules. Here, children spend time reading stories, solving puzzles, creating art, learning new concepts, and celebrating small achievements that remind them they are capable of so much more than what their illness suggests.
Cancer can make the future feel uncertain for the ill children and their families.
One of the greatest gifts education offers is perspective. It encourages children to think beyond the next hospital visit and imagine the years ahead. Whether they dream of becoming a doctor, an artist, a teacher, an engineer, or simply returning to school with their friends, those aspirations become powerful sources of motivation.
Instead of getting defined by their illness, children begin to associate with their interests, talents, and ambitions.
They are reminded that cancer is only one chapter of their story, not the entirety of it.
Every child experiences illness differently. Some are frightened, others feel frustrated, lonely, or confused about why they have to spend so much time in a hospital.
Alongside education, children receive psychosocial support that helps them process these emotions in healthy ways. Through guided activities, conversations, creative expression, and age-appropriate counselling, they are encouraged to speak openly about what they feel.
Whether a child finds comfort in painting, storytelling, music, science, or problem-solving, these passions become important stepping stones towards rebuilding confidence and self-esteem. Healing, after all, is emotional as much as it is physical.
Perhaps one of the most meaningful aspects of Indus Kay Sitaray is the community it creates. In a regular classroom, children build friendships over shared interests. Here, they also find companionship through shared experiences.
Surrounded by peers who understand hospital routines, treatment days, and the emotions that come with illness, children realise they are not facing cancer alone. They celebrate birthdays together, encourage one another through difficult days, share laughter during classroom activities, and form friendships built on empathy and resilience.
For many children, these relationships become an important source of comfort throughout their treatment journey.
When treatment ends, children eventually return to schools, neighbourhoods, and routines they had to leave behind.
By continuing to learn during their hospital journey, they are better prepared to transition back into everyday life with confidence. More importantly, they carry with them something far greater than academic knowledge; they carry resilience, self-belief, and the confidence to embrace the future.
Education becomes a bridge between surviving cancer and truly living beyond it.
At Indus Kay Sitaray, children are reminded that cancer may interrupt childhood, it should never define it. Every lesson, every friendship, every creative activity, and every encouraging conversation reinforces one simple truth: their dreams are still valid, their potential remains limitless, and brighter days lie ahead.
Because every child deserves the chance to dream again.
