In Indus Hospital & Health Network’s children’s oncology ward, a tiny warrior was fighting a big battle. Two-month-old Mohammad Abdul Rehman had been visiting IHHN for weeks, accompanied by his aunt, Salma. He was born a sickly baby and sought treatment at a different hospital, but doctors suspected something was seriously wrong and referred him to IHHN. What the doctors found was heartbreaking: Abdul Rehman had blood cancer.
His father and aunt made the difficult decision to keep this devastating news from his mother. The family didn’t want to burden her with the weight of this devastating disease, especially when his siblings were healthy and thriving. Instead, she was informed her little one was just fighting an infection.
The challenge was compounded by Abdul Rehman’s tender age. At just two months old, he was too young for chemotherapy treatment. Instead, the medical team carefully tracked his Complete Blood Count (CBC), provided vitamin supplements, and provided consistent blood transfusions. The role of blood donors was critical in saving his life, ensuring he could survive this uphill battle. It underscores the importance of a steady blood supply, as each transfusion brings new hope and a chance for baby Abdul Rehman to thrive.
As his aunt Salma navigated this difficult journey, her strength and love for Abdul Rehman shone through. Thanks to her dedication and IHHN’s support, Abdul Rehman is receiving the care he needs, all without costing his family a thing. Though the road ahead is uncertain, one thing is clear: Abdul Rehman is not alone in his fight. His anonymous blood donors are unsung heroes, giving selflessly to help save countless lives.
